Rainy Duck Hunt Opener

Posted by Landon

Yesterday was the duck hunt opener for the 2008-2009 season. We are pretty spoiled hunters because my dad is a member of The New State, a duck club west of West Bountiful. Like last year's opener, it rained most of the day. The good part, though, was that the ducks were flying! There were so many birds at first that we could have filled up (2, 7 duck limits) in like 20 minutes if we wanted to, but we decided we weren't going to shoot any small birds like Green Wing Teal, just big birds like Mallard and Gadwall. That worked out at first until Jeremy and I missed a couple of good shots and then things started to slow down a lot. We decided if we didn't want to sit there and freeze in the rain we better start shooting Teal. We Shot 14 Ducks by 11:00 am, not too bad for a 3 hour hunt.

Sage is a great Bird Dog!
I really enjoy going hunting with my dad and Jeremy, sometimes even Grandpa and Uncle Keith shoot out of the same post as us. It's more than just killing ducks, we have a pretty good time just talking and joking around. Hopefully I can get out more this year than I did last year, especially since I only went twice. The only bad thing is no one else besides me likes to eat duck. I try to get Hol to eat it with me but she gags just by the smell of it. Oh well, more for me! :)

Nice pile of ducks!

Sounds like good times. I didn't think that you could really eat the duck. Don't you just eat a lot of buck shot? Or am I talking about another hunting thing. (As you can tell I have not idea).

P.S. Your baby countdown in cool!
